I'd never made the connection between Turok and Metroid Prime, but it's kind of obvious once pointed out.

Turok, despite being an outstanding achievement on its console, is another one, like Doom 64, that is still much better when played through a later port. I strongly recommend getting the updated version of D64 when you get to that point, because it's worth every penny [and you can get it for pennies relatively, even not on sale] and you don't have to play it with an N64 controller.

I had the exact same reaction, I wasn't aware of the circumstances behind Retro Studios' founding before doing research for this article but it makes so much sense.

I definitely agree, Turok is a great game and a fantastic achievement but a bit painful to play on the original hardware today. My plan for this series is to play both original and remastered versions where applicable (mainly to get my own screenshots) so I can give a more broad critical opinion and because I already own the bulk of the N64 shooter library so might as well use the originals too. Looking forward to playing the Doom 64 modern port because thanks to a funny mistake at the studio the original version is so dark you can't play it in the day time.

I always thought it was especially funny how 'Doom 3 dark' became a meme when half of D64 was like reading burnt ink at midnight.

I remember getting it and thinking "I'll just turn the gamma up, the slider is right there." The difference is like using an unlit screen in a dark room versus trying to make out a dim monitor while squinting. It took me ages to finish the game because I could only play it in pitch black.
