I love the ergonomics of my Dualsense Edge but god the build quality is bad and the battery life is terrible. Wth Sony? You can't build a $200 controller that feels premium?

Larger screen size on Switch 2 is a game changer for me vs original Switch - it has become my go-to gaming device on the road vs my laptop.

Sony's arrogance has always been its weak point: saw it with the PS3, seeing it again now, when they know they're ahead, all corners are cut and every penny is wrung; Nintendo have a different market giving them free-reign now Xbox is more or less dead.

The Switch 2 is a great machine. I have my doubts it will ever reach the sales and impact of the original but no doubt, in 1-2 years I think it will be the best console on the market.

I'm still so on the fence regarding Switch 2 ports. I'm really really hoping its done a bit better this time around. Some of the Switch ones were (and still are) a money-grabbing disaster.

Some of the early ports I've played say otherwise. But its too soon to make a call, as some are actually for Switch 1, and are incidentally on the Nintendo Store.

But that all said: When I travel, I can't lug my PS5 with me. The portability is still a huge component of the Switch. Will be interesting to see if Sony patches this up with a new device this year.

The signs are good so far but about 2-3 years into the Switch 1 third party games became heavily botched, I hope we don't see that again.

The only horrendous one I know of so far is Skyrim, why Bethesda can't get it to run well on Switch 2 is beyond me.

Heard lots of rumours of a PS Portal Pro, I could see that doing well.

Thanks for the article! I plan on getting a PS5 this month and it's good to know what I'm in for.

I'm getting it primarily for two reasons.

1. Trophies. Nintendo's lack of a trophy/achievement system bugs me more than it should. I know they're pointless, but they're quite satisfying!

2. Cheaper used games. You can buy five solid PS5 games for a little over $100 used... not so with Switch 2.

Sad to hear about the cheap controller, though...

Enjoy! Feels like the console finally came into its own last year and prices are quite reasonable now.

I have to say, trophies are something I enjoyed a lot when I was younger but have slowly come to hate, the way they're handled on consoles at least, Steam is much less intrusive and doesn't have this Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum stuff.

What goes up... must never come down, the law of Nintendo price physics. Horrible to buy Switch and GameCube games atm, even second hand.

There's no getting around it: the controller is crap, absolutely shocking battery life.

Yes, it’s about time!

I just wish Nintendo had… something. All the major platforms have some sort of “Good job doing X” system, except Nintendo. Feels ridiculous at this point.

Some proper leaderboards for score-based NES, SNES etc. games would be quite cool and it would be nice if you got a badge/exclusive profile picture or something for beating a game even if they didn't want to to go for full achievements; I'd probably beat a lot of my retro games on Switch then too just for posterity.

They still haven't updated/remade YouTube App for Switch 2, they need to get on that.

That would be cool!

Something worth mentioning is that the NSO subscription allows you to play retro games online as well.

I don't know how good it actually is, as I haven't personally used it, but playing games like Mario Party 1-3, Pokémon Stadium and, eventually, Double Dash in online multiplayer is a plus when you can't get all your friends in a single room for couch multiplayer.

Anyway, great article! A lot of people think PS5 wins by default because it's more powerful, but your post highlights many other factors to consider.

Gagh, can't believe I never mentioned that, I even played through most of DKC in online CO-OP once and it was amazing. It works really well. I don't use Switch Online much (I have most of these games on the consoles already) but the CRT filter is one of the nicer ones too.

Cheers! Even in the power department I think the gap is smaller than most would imagine, I think it's mainly areas like anti-aliasing, particle effects and shadow detail where the PS5 pulls ahead.

Interesting, didn't know the Switch 2 was *that* powerful. I'm slowly convincing myself to sell my Xbox Series S in favor of a Switch 2 (well, at least after I'm done with Fable lol)

The Switch 2 is a great bit of hardware and nobody is really pushing it to the limit yet; RE Requiem, according to journalists who played the Alpha build is a solid 60FPS on Switch 2 docked which is awesome.

Ah man I wish I could look forward to the new Fable, fond memories of 2 and 3 as a kid, I just don't have faith in anything Xbox

Just sharing the same opinion I wrote on the Nintendo Is Great post about the latest Nintendo Direct: I really want to give the Switch 2 a chance, but as long as I can play the same games on my PS5, there's no reason to have both platforms. Mario Kart World, DK Bananza, and GameCube official emulation aren't enough for me yet.
