Good job recognising KOTORs and SWTOR as all time greats. I feel if they had made SWTOR a single player game like the KOTORs, it could be legendary. But alas, capitalism won.
There were plans for a KOTOR III (along with an Imperial Commando game) but LucasArts underwent a lot of internal reshuffling around the year 2005 which led to these getting cancelled. I do love SWTOR but for sure, an actual KOTOR III would have been even better
I'd have said Republic Commando was excellent. Forgot some great ones too, Dark Forces, X-Wing, TIE FIghter, X-Wing Alliance, Empire At War, Galaxies (this one also thr only realy amd true MMO where you could do anything you wanted, you weren't lead to anything. It was a true sandbox)
Most of these I don't have because I didn't play them or they fell out of my rough timeline... but I'm kicking myself for not including Empire At War, that's a great RTS.
Believe me, that almost happened. Basically the same game but academy won out because of the campaign structure and I prefer Jedi Star Wars to grounded, infantry scrub Star Wars
It's always good to see KOTOR appreciated for its worth. A lot of people like it and yet it somehow STILL feels underappreciated. I also agree with Republic Commando's placement where many would jump to drive it higher. Probably has to do with a preference of mine for story-driven experiences and massive world building. (Shame we never could see the Hazard Troopers from Academy anywhere else!)
I know it's beloved but I've seen the sentiment online that Mass Effect is "Just better KOTOR." And I couldn't disagree more; Mass Effect is an entirely different genre of RPG for a start and the Mass Effect universe is science fiction, not science fantasy/space opera like Star Wars.
I actually replayed Rep. Commando less than a month ago and it wasn't quite as good as I remembered, so it ended up there despite most willing to put it higher.
Unfortunately I think a lot of casuals tend to mistake Star Wars for science-fiction, even having walked the main entryways into the saga. Perhaps the genre has become, and has always been, too closely associated with space.
I don't get this need in the past 15 years or so to make sci-fi really science-y or to make Star Wars 'grounded' and 'gritty'; the boat sailed on gritty remakes by about 2010. Like a good joke, space age technology and things like the Jedi tend to be ruined when you explain them. I write science fiction myself on a second publication and I try to avoid some of these pitfalls keenly.
The Martian was a film that sort of bored me and wasn't what I want out of the genre but it seems to have become the template for space films and media going forward.
The mythicism of Star Wars and its extensive world has long been dumped for whatever cult has risen around the adjacent genres.
You can also tell it is being driven down a Cyberpunk-ish route lately that doesn't fit it at all. And with every new project, the difficulty of returning to the saga's roots is felt harsher, more distance being placed whenever they attempt to mimic other works and StarWarsize them rather than making their template... Star Wars itself.
I couldn't agree more, I'd even go as far as saying I dislike the cyberpunk genre as a whole. It all looks the same visually and I don't need to be reminded of the world we already live in when I can escape into the United Federation of Planets or a Galaxy Far Far Away
I remember playing the precursor to Jedi Outcast called Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. It was the first time that Kyle Katarn became a Jedi (or not, allowing you to be evil), with acted out FMV cutscenes.
So Jedi Outcast was one of my favourites because it took all that to the next level, even if you had to suffer the first few missions without a lightsaber.
Another pair of classics, I've always wanted to play them but unfortunately, only the first has been remastered and older PC games can be a real stinker to get working
Good list, but I would’ve replaced Lego Star Wars one & two with the Complete Saga, which collects all six movies as well as bonus missions. It just feels like a better game. But, to each his own.
