Most of these series I haven't played, but over the years, I've followed their disappointing sagas and I see where you're coming from for sure.

An additional one I'd place here is Chrono Trigger. It's baffling to me that Square Enix hasn't done anything with one of their most beloved titles.

Also Sega doing anything with their post-Genesis/Mega Drive games, like Saturn or Dreamcast titles like Skies of Arcadia. Even some game collections would be nice, they could just make them digital-only, I don't care. I grew up on Genesis, but even I'm tired of playing those compilations over and over again

I've never played Chrono Trigger or Chrono Cross but I can imagine a remake bundle of those would absolutely print money given how beloved (and expensive) they are today.

So true, they've got a whole suite of games that just have never seen the light of day again; I'm all about original hardware but there are so many Saturn games that have never been re-released that I would pay good money to get a remake of. Deep Fear is one I'd love to play and Dragon Force

Yes to Dragon Force! Also Burning Rangers, we need more firefighting games.

I'd love to play these games, I could suck it up and emulate but... well, where's the fun in that?

Absolute shame that Skies of Arcadia hasn't been remade/re-released. SUCH a great game!

Been on my list of must-plays for the Dreamcast for over 2 years now, an expensive game but not ludicrously so, expect to see it pop up on the Journal someday

I found it it really enjoyable, with some very unique elements and a great story overall.

I found myself nodding more and more aggressively the further down I got. Great list!

I still haven't forgiven disney for cease and desisting that UE4 Kotor overhaul mod a few years back, and never will. It looked so promising...

Lawrence 'Scanlines' Lichfield's avatar

Instead, they want to give us a £70 'remake' that shits all over the original's writing and will likely maul its art-style too

Nathaniel Walden's avatar

Yup. Obviously they committed may sins, but that was what did it for me. Have not given them a cent since.

I drifted away from Star Wars and towards Trek as a teen, I've always enjoyed both though that golden age of Star Wars games in the 2000's hasn't been topped since.

The less we say about what Disney did to the films, the better

"EA happened"

No need to say anymore, you win the quote of the day 😂

You make some interesting cases. NIGHTs was a strange game, I enjoyed it at the time but I've played in more recently on Steam (before it was removed from the store) and it is certainly a weird one that hasn't particularly aged well. Splinter Cell was also one I had on the original Xbox that I kind of enjoyed, but like you said the stealth was more serious and I started to lose interest after a while.

It was a great post though.

Glad you liked it!

I have to say, I've been playing Nights for a few weeks and I've slowly began to like it less; the boss fights are really terrible and a lot of the levels are just too long and confusing to navigate for the game's arcade nature.

Glad to see some much deserved love for Code Veronica, I replayed it a few years ago during a chronological Resident Evil marathon and it was still as lovely as ever. One can’t help but agree on the sad demise of the RTS genre and of historical TW games, too.

As for Yakuza, unless you absolutely can’t stand Kasuga, I strongly suggest giving Infinite Wealth a chance, as roughly half of it has an heavily nostalgic focus on Kiryu and the game ends up pursuinh a number of surprising narrative choices, like the religious theming of some of its main characters foreshadowed by that rather bizarre Last Supper-style promotional artwork Sega released before the game was out (including multiple variants in order to avoid spoilers, given how fans were bound to focus on which character was taking Judas’ place).

I'd always heard it wasn't that great and had all these problems, while that second part is true, it still rose up my rankings to become my second favourite in the series over time. I love RTS games but it might be the most stale genre going: it's Total War, Eugen Systems, Relic or nothing.

I did actually like Kasuga but man, by the end of LaD 7 I was just sick and tired of that combat system and the random encounters. I'm really not a big RPG fan: I love KOTOR, I love Morrowind and Oblivion and that's pretty much it, so the turn-based stuff was really off-putting, though I am trying to play more of these kids of games.

I'll pick it up someday for sure, maybe once my low-level annoyance at them changing the genre fades lol

My takeaway here is that I need to try Imperator!

F-Zero was an amazing game in 1991, but the trouble is that it was overshadowed by Super Mario Kart exactly one year later, and that’s how it has been ever since. I like the F-Zero games, but I get Nintendo’s decision to basically say there’s not really room for them to co-exist with Mario Kart.

I’ll go ahead and argue that another SNES launch title deserves revisiting though: Pilotwings. People like to argue these games are just a visual effects showcase. But I’ll admit I still play them to this day and think they represent a rather underserved niche: flying games that center themselves around the joy of flight, incorporating just enough realism to accomplish that goal.

Imperator: Rome is awesome, just grab al 2 of the DLC that ever came out for it, download Invictus from the workshop and the mod that adds Asia and boom, you've got what's probably my 2nd favourite Paradox game these days, no joke.

Worse still, I don't think it can co-exist with games like Wipeout or Fast Fusion, I'm not sure what they could do to really set it apart.

I've not played a Pilotwings but from what I've seen of them they're neat games and a fun time, I'd buy a new one but not at full Triple-A price.

Nothing chills me to the bone more than the thought of a new Command and Conquer game being announced

Lawrence 'Scanlines' Lichfield's avatar

All they need to do is retcon C&C4, Joseph Kucan isn't getting any younger, they need to make it happen

Thanks to you, now I'll be dreaming with a NiGHTS inspired indie game for the next few days. XD

As for LaD, I agree 100%. The last time I felt we had a "traditional" game in the series was in The Man Who Erased His Name, but that was just a side story and much of what happened in that game was completely erased (ha-ha) in Infinite Wealth. It's time to the series have a new main line game in the gente that made it famous!

Lawrence 'Scanlines' Lichfield's avatar

I'm convinced it'll happen someday, the Saturn gets plenty of love online and especially in Japan.

It feels like a bit of a slap in the face, they made this awesome combat system with ragdolls and fancy graphics with the Dragon Engine, only to make it all turn-based and then have those games be the spin-offs; it's like if Halo stopped being an FPS and made the mainline games RTS instead.

I sadly don't think we'll see a Killzone reboot anytime soon cause Horizon is working well for Sony, but I'd love to see that or even a new try at Resistance, if I had to choose I'd actually prefer a new resistance as I think if they did it and maybe did some sort of new system with crafting/survival it could actually take a good idea and make it better.

Also, I am that guy who would have preferred a Code Veronica remake over the crappy RE4 one, and I'll gladly die on this hill.

And EA should not do anything with Command and Conquer, other than maybe sell the IP to someone who actually gives a crap and wants to do it right. I fear all kinds of needless DLC, and needless things added to a game that is so iconic. It just needs some polish and hell maybe just full on reboot the damn thing so it can tell its own thing instead of retell what came before, and we all ignore Twilight anyway so we can continue to do so without regret
