Lovely review. I don't now these types of games or much about the Zelda franchise so I also learned a lot. :) I was intrigued by this game as I also thought it looked to be a nice looking game on the switch 2 and I could learn a bit more Zelda lore. Seems to do a nice enough job of that.

Cheers :)

It's hard to 100% recommend just because musou is one of those love it or hate it genres for a lot of people. It's definitely nice looking and helps fill in some of the gaps, it'll keep you occupied for a good while too.

Worth the full price but maybe watch some gameplay to gauge if the repetition is for you.

Loved the review! It's a shame this one didn't deliver to expectations as I really enjoyed the BotW / TotK world building and would love to play a cannon presentation of the Age of Imprisonment.

Glad you enjoyed it! It’s a decent game and worth the price of admission in my opinion but still not as good as the first

I appreciate this review, especially as I don't think Substack gaming is going to cover this one.

That said, I'm about 6 hours into Age of Imprisonment and... it's probably my least favorite entry in the Hyrule Warriors series so far. It's unbelievably dreary and their attempt at humor - Calumno or whatever he's called - is awful, even in Japanese. I liked Age of Calamity's rewrite of history. It was surprising! I don't come to HW games for canon, I come for insanity.

Age of Imprisonment delivers in terms of sync strikes, but I really don't like how the game forces you to use Zonai tech. My least favorite part of TotK feels all but mandatory here.

AoI is fun, but compared to the other two - and especially the original HW, what a blast that was - I can't help but feel disappointed.

And I appreciate you reading!

If there's one thing I think everyone can agree on it's that neither of these games have matched the original Hyrule Warriors. Unfettered by the bounds of series canon and tie-in expectations, it was a perfect, good-natured tribute to Zelda and it's the only one of the three I feel is a true musou game, rather than a Zelda tie-in with a musou skin; I really meant it when I said I was disappointed by the missions not feeling like battles, that was probably my #1 complaint with Calamity and it hasn't been addressed.

Calamo is really annoying and something I forgot to note too is that the constant dialogue boxes and objectives popping up is super irritating in this game.

My thoughts are still very mixed on Tears Of The Kingdom and its devices even approaching 3 years later, I like the devices generally but I am a bit miffed with how they mess about with Li-I mean the Mysterious Construct's moveset, even if it is clever and fun.

AoI is one of those games I think is easy to recommend to new players but hard to recommend to existing fans. It's just not as good as the first one, still, after all these years.

The "put in 5 fish and 10 acorns and Zelda unlocks the testicular torsion combo" line caught me completely by surprise.
