Goldeneye became such an integral part of gaming culture that we usually took it for granted. It's great to have someone to remind us why this Rare masterpiece (pun intended) is a cornerstone of many staples we have in modern game design. Great post, as usual!

Goldeneye was the reason I bought an N64 (which makes me a lot older than you!) I had only had Sega consoles till then, but playing it once at a friend's house immediately convinced me I needed this, and I'm so glad I did.

My memories are therefore going to be different to yours because they are more ingrained and less objective. I really loved playing this game and had a lot of fun in particular playing multiplayer with friends. I think your points and criticisms are valid too though, I haven't been able to play it since the N64 days and I know it's hard to remap the controls to anything not that controller which makes it harder to play. A great perspective from someone who wasn't raised on it at the time.

You are correct about the soundtrack though, I don't know how they managed to remix the same Bond theme for every mission and still make it sound unique.
