Goldeneye became such an integral part of gaming culture that we usually took it for granted. It's great to have someone to remind us why this Rare masterpiece (pun intended) is a cornerstone of many staples we have in modern game design. Great post, as usual!

Really appreciate you coming back here to my original post.

If you can get over the archaic controls (or remap them and improve the framerate via another method of play besides N64) I still think Goldeneye is an absolute blast to play. I do ultimately think this formula was perfected in TimeSplitters but those games don't havd that Bond charm and iconic soundtrack.

Goldeneye was the reason I bought an N64 (which makes me a lot older than you!) I had only had Sega consoles till then, but playing it once at a friend's house immediately convinced me I needed this, and I'm so glad I did.

My memories are therefore going to be different to yours because they are more ingrained and less objective. I really loved playing this game and had a lot of fun in particular playing multiplayer with friends. I think your points and criticisms are valid too though, I haven't been able to play it since the N64 days and I know it's hard to remap the controls to anything not that controller which makes it harder to play. A great perspective from someone who wasn't raised on it at the time.

You are correct about the soundtrack though, I don't know how they managed to remix the same Bond theme for every mission and still make it sound unique.

Before I reply, I wanted to say it means a lot that you came to give my first article a read. I really appreciate it. I wrote this back in January and I've always been really pleased with it but I didn't have an audience at the time so alas, it's been stuck on very low reads all these months.

Most likely! I'm only 25 (born in 2000) but a combination of luck and an inherent interest in older games meant I managed to experience a lot of 90's gaming through compilations and gifted older consoles as a kid. I got an N64 for my 9th birthday and while I didn't grow up with Goldeneye (Pokemon Snap, Rogue Squadron and Pokemon Stadium were my mainstays) I consider this my favourite Nintendo console and Goldeneye to be an absolute essential.

It's funny, the N64 control is an absolute dog and yet it's perfect for that era's FPS games. Even playing Perfect Dar or Turok, it just felt so natural. In my opinion, the real barrier with N64 shooters is not the controls but rather the framerate. I have a very high tolerance for dated graphics and framerate but Turok 2 made me throw in the towel, even though I really liked the game. Goldeneye suffers from this big time in its late levels too.

Absolutely legendary soundtrack, easily one of the best in gaming history.
