I was surprised at how long it took for Tears of the Kingdom to come out, especially with how much they could reuse from Breath of the Wild. But the new powers in that game are technically super impressive and probably took a lot of work to get right

I almost included Breath of the Wild itself actually, though it never really reached that "Is this still even coming out?" Status that I was looking for.

To me the real prize goes to Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar, a game that began development when the likely insane solo developer quit/was fired from Wizardry 8, and decided to make a Wizardry style game so epic that it would humiliate Sir-Tech. Development took so long [almost exactly 20 years] and was so uncoordinated that Cleve seems to have completely forgotten how undocumented parts of his own code worked, it took over a year for him to piece together a manual after release [which wasn't complete or totally correct] and it is still a genuinely impressive, if extremely intimidating and brutal example of the genre. It's virtually impossible to get into if you're not an old-school CRPG nerd already, and it's pretty hard to put down if you are.

I've not heard of this one. It's a shame I found little trace of it because a project that long and gruelling deserves its flowers.

I'd like to add the DLC to Katana Zero to this list. The original game was released in April 2019 and to this day the DLC still wasn't released. Originally, the idea was to release it within a couple of months after the release.

While I'm sure that Askiisoft is still working on it, I'm not confident that it will be released anytime soon. That's a shame because Katana Zero is an absolutely brilliant game.

Star Citizen, anyone? I’m especially surprised you didn’t bring it up since you’re British and so is Roberts.

Honestly Freelancer was a kind of Star Citizen before Star Citizen. Although I did really enjoy that game at the time. And Wing Commander Privateer was a top 3 DOS game for me. But I’ve never held out hope of Star Citizen being something being both real and enjoyable to me.

I didn't bring it up because I consider the game to be an elaborate scam

Can’t really disagree. So take it back to Freelancer. That game was real. 7 year development cycle, years of delays. Sold company to Microsoft. Finally released and it was perfectly serviceable but didn’t match Roberts’ grand ambitions.

I don’t think it’s an easy game to play nowadays. The smaller, mission-based game Starlancer came out on Dreamcast and I’ve meant to try out that version but never got around to it (I did play through it on PC back in the day).

I knew it took quite a while but never realised it was quite that tumultuous, might have made a good entry, definitely.

Funny you say that, Starlancer has been on my Dreamcast list for a few years now too, I hear it's really solid.

Good list. Some other ones you could have added:

- Metroid Prime 4, seeing as it was rebooted during its long development. At least that is actually coming out though.

- Beyond Good and Evil 2, a game so long in development (and still going) and mythical that no one actually knows what it is, possibly even the development team too.
