Really appreciate this in depth post and your honesty about the console and Mario Kart World!

Sounds like a fantastic time and well worth the investment.

Glad you enjoyed! I think the best compliment I can give it is that it makes the Switch 1 feel largely obsolete, especially if they keep rolling out these updates but Nintendo seem to cast any sort of ergonomics to the wind after the Wii-U.

It's definitely an investment right now but with Kong on the way and surprisingly promising signs from Game Freak, along with the elusive Metroid Prime 4, I think by Winter the library will have a lot more meat on its bones.

A well thought out and balanced review on the internet... Is that even possible? 🙂 I enjoyed reading this, thank you. I never get anything the first day it is released but I will get a Switch 2 in a year or so once I see more games specifically for it - got plenty of games on my backlog to catch up with first!

That's what I'm here for! No top tens, no sad Mario face bullshit thumbnails, no bandwagon crap, just good and honest reviews. A wise choice I think. The Switch 1 still has lots of awesome stuff and even if I'm wholly satisfied so far, there's no denying that the Switch 2 doesn't have heaps of new games to play at the moment.

Thank you for this detailed and extensive review! I’m fighting the fomo bad right now. Mario Kart looks like such a blast but I can’t wait for Metroid!

Thanks for this detailed post about your experience and analyse of the switch 2 and Mario kart.

I can’t really disagree with anything so far. 😅 I do find it weirdly comfy but then I’ve only played two Mario kart Grand Prix’ at a time so maybe longer gaming sessions in handheld mode will be a bit tougher on the hands. I do think I may look for grips as I will play handheld. :) thank you. Great post and yeah a shame the wider community is a bit negative and odd about the release of the switch. Next it will be silksong they want to fail haha

The whole cottage industry of third-party grips and accessories has been really cool to see and I have no doubt you'll find something good; if I end up playing handheld more than expected, I might gran something myself.

I can't wait for them to realise it's a Metroidvania sequel and that sequels to Metroidvania games generally just have a different map and a few extra powers.

I can absolutely recommend Skull & Co. Great value, I’ve used the Neo Grip on my OLED and bought the grip stand for the 2. The Neo is great and the grip stand is like a budget dbrand case, so far I’m impressed. Edit- the grip stand is sold under their rebrand now, Savage Raven (must sound more gamerish or something 🤷‍♂️😂)

Wait 7 days before writing was a wise decision. You ended writing one of (if not) the more complete and detailed review of the Switch 2 I read so far. Great stuff!

Glad you enjoyed it! That's what I aim to do: to talk about the tangible differences rather than spout a load of numbers.

Great review, refreshingly free of some of the whinging elsewhere. I honestly agree with much of what you say, I have been really impressed overall and don’t regret the purchase at all. I play mostly handheld and while I agree the base ergonomics aren’t great, a decent grip case can be had pretty cheap. If Nintendo had improved the ergonomics a whole sub industry would be out of business ha ha.

The mouse functionality is, in my opinion, really innovative. It easy to be down on them and say “it’s just a mouse” but really, apart from the Steam Deck track pads, who else has done anything like this for a games console? The new Rune Factory game already uses them brilliantly by going into top down mode in certain instances if using them.

I do have a major gripe about the storage, or more specifically storage expansion. I don’t mind buying extra storage for my handhelds but it feels like the SD Express format is way behind currently. It’s really expensive and the most readily available capacity of 256gb just isn’t enough for the cost. I feel Nintendo could have gone with a base 512gb here until the SD Express format caught up and got cheaper or at least allowed us to connect an external drive to the dock to store games. I’d say that’s my only downside though. I’m excited to see what the future holds.

It's been so annoying, I hate the gaming internet sometimes. Every other video is 'I'm Not Buying the Switch 2' alright, what do you want? A medal? That's true and at least the kick stand and speakers are really good this time, they were terrible on the original Switch and just okay on the OLED.

It opens up so much for the future. Civ 7 works great and I can imagine most RTS or grand strategy games would too: Hearts of Iron 4, Crusader Kings 3... they're all a bit CPU intensive but I think the Switch 2 could manage. I'd love to see ports. Command and Conquer Remastered... all sorts.

I foolishly forgot to mention the storage, I'm almost always buying games on an SD card so it slipped my mind. I have to agree that it's a bit deficient and annoying, especially when you can grab 1/2TB USB SSD's for relatively cheap now; the Wii-U allowed external devices too.

The thing I'm most curious about is how well Switch 2 will handle indie ports and store visibility - I was very impressed with some of the things I found on the original Switch, games I'd really never expected to show up outside of Steam, but it was rare to see them promoted or even find out they were on the platform much less on sale unless you used an external tracker. Worst of all, sometimes I'd recommend something based on my PC experience and find out it ran pretty badly on the original Switch - which should be something the improved specs can fix.
